Niagara Border Crossing, 2008

Niagara on the Lake, Ontario; Institutional

Architectural designs can be informed by ideologies. Often abstract, but many times blatant, the expression of building forms reflect the characters of its client. In the case of the Niagara border crossing, a pair of immigration centers illustrates the unique attributes of its respective hosts, while demonstrating commonalities.

A series of undulating rectilinear modules was devised from the Niagara Escarpment and Rainbow Bridge on site they are in. Placing this form in its vertical orientation, its ambitious and powerful nature fittingly serves as the American immigration facilities. Using the exact same form in its horizontal orientation, a calm and spreading inference suitably suggests Canada and houses its respective immigration works. As context informs the form, this one form conjointly applies to two distinct clients, in two distinct ways - pun intended.
